Registration for the 2017 Summer Camp Eurekas is Closed

Both Camps will feature two sessions with Vex IQ, both of which are open all kids ages 7-12.  Although the games will be different in each session, both will focus on the how to build and program a robot with Vex IQ, experimenting with different lifts, drive trains, and gear ratios.

June Camp Sessions:

  • In the morning, from 8am-12pm, there will be a game similar to Capture the Flag!  Robots will be tasked to build fortification walls to protect their ‘flag’ and work in robot teams to continue protecting their ‘flag’ whilst trying to get the opposing team’s ‘flag.’  Students will be working on this game throughout the week, improving their robots through the engineering process!
  • In the afternoon, from 1 pm-5pm, the game will be a modified version of the 2016 Vex IQ game, Bankshot, similar to basketball!  Students will need to build robots that can score balls in a goal, gaining more points the further away from the goal they score.

July Camp Sessions:

  • The morning session will be from 8 am to 12 pm and will feature a VEX IQ game that is for both beginners and experienced students alike. Age limit is 7 – 12.
  • In the afternoon, from 1 pm to 5 pm, we will be having an advanced VEX IQ session (ages 8 -13). This session will focusing on going beyond the beginner skills. We will be putting emphasis on programming with sensors by exploring challenges in a disaster rescue themed VEX IQ challenge! Because of the increased difficulty of this session, we highly recommend this to only those who have had previous experience with both VEX IQ building and programming, and desire to learn about the next level of robotics!
    • Our required** pre-requisites for this session include: (**we may offer exceptions on a case to case basis)
      • Previous experience with VEX IQ modkit
      • Previous experience with VEX IQ (e.g. attended a previous Camp, experience in school program or at home, etc.)
      • At least 8 years old

For both the June and July Camps, sessions will be held at C205 on the Hilo High School campus. Tuition is $175 per student for each session.

Scholarship Opportunities

Hilo Viking Robotics will be offering scholarships for students that are unable to pay tuition in whole and are in need of financial assistance.  Two scholarships are available.  To register for a scholarship, please fill out the form available here in addition to your registration forms.  You will be notified whether or not you qualified for the scholarship by Friday, July 7th, 2017.

The scholarships are meant to provide an opportunity to students who would not be able to experience Camp Eureka otherwise.  If you are able to pay tuition for camp in full, please do not apply.

Camp Eureka is a week-long robotics and engineering camp hosted by our club during school breaks and intercession.  The purpose of Camp Eureka is to spread science and technology information throughout the community and help our club fundraise for trips and parts.  During camp, each student is placed in a group with one or two other students, which is mentored by one of the club members.  This style of teaching encourages cooperation and creativity, and provides students with individualized instruction from our members.  It also ensures that all students find our camps educational and enjoyable!
